Lost in Thought
While I love looking at photographs of people, I really have never had too much interest in taking them (other than blurred and such). However last week, I saw this young lady sitting on a bench so lost in thought, that she did not even notice me only a few feet away taking photographs of her.

May have been lost in thought, but definitely not lost in translation. Love this.
Kathryn: thanks kindly--somethings don't need words, to translate.
They don't look like happy thoughts. It's a lovely portrait and the sepia certainly matches the mood.
Kathryn: No they don't, do they Mary? Nice to know color works for you. I also softened it a bit to capture her mood.
What a wonderful capture. I love this natural portrait.
Kathryn: Thanks kindly. Kay.
Lost in thought but not lost in translation. I like what M'rov said. For not having much interest in taking portraits, Kathryn, you sure have taken a winner!
Kathryn: I like M'roy's idea too, we can all empathize. Thanks for your kind words.
Good tight crop on her face and beautiful tonal range. I am generally not very interested in portraits, but this appeals!
Kathryn: Thanks so much, Martin. I wondered if the crop was too tight, but went with it anyway. The tone just suited her look so well and damped the midday sun and I also applied a very slight blur to get the soft look.
Lovely portrait Kathryn. She seems to have the weight of the world on her shoulder.
Kathryn: Richa, I watched her for a while before I decided to take her photograph...she was for sure very engrossed in her thoughts.
I agree with Richa. A very typical pic of a young girl of the age of 15ff. years - a little sceptic, thoughtful, sometimes "mit sich und der Welt zerfallen, himmelhochjauchzend, zu Tode betrübt", an always changing state of mind!
Kathryn: Philine, I agree very typical of young girls...up and down. Your phrase "mit sich und der Welt zerfallen, himmelhochjauchzend, zu Tode betrübt"..I was able to figure it out with a little help from LEO, but I am wondering from where it came. Such an apt description!
This is an expression of something that without doubt every person does at various times through the day, every day and for the whole of our lives. Yet it never ceases to intrigue me when such introspection is observed ...and it can occur for so many reasons. I wouldn't venture to think what her thoughts are. Sometimes emotions are so openly expressed, sometimes the face can behave like a chameleon. Delightful capture helped by your subtle tint. richard
Kathryn: Yes we do, Richard. We move through our days with so many emotions, expressed and unexpressed. I think our eyes and our faces reveal so much about us. No need for words.
Nice candid study, well cropped.
Kathryn: Thanks, Mike!
A wonderful portrait, Kathryn, with so much pensive thought in the model.
Kathryn: Chad, thanks..perhaps the authenticity of the moment adds a little depth to the photograph.
I agree with you about taking photographs of people - somehow a posed photograph doesn't do it for me, but when you catch someone unawares like this, the results are far superior. I like the crop and the subtle colouring.
Ingrid
Kathryn: Thanks kindly, Ingrid. I am with you on the posed photographs--
You did a very good job here, the look in her eyes says it all, very well spotted and captured.
Very pensive, very sad, it seems. It's a great capture. I'm glad that she didn't spot you taking the picture. It might have made her feel worse!
Kathryn: Ian, I wanted to catch up with her and get her name, address, and send her this photograph. She walked away before I could. I looked for her, but did not find her. So now she remains a nameless girl with a look on her face that transcends the need for words.
Excellent candid. Your feeling about portraits is exactly the same here - like to look at them but very seldom take them. Even if I have done some weddings in my pre-digital days.
Kathryn: Thanks so much, Louis. There are times when I look at wedding photographs and marvel at the ability of the photographer to perform on demand. I am not an "on demand" kind of girl.
lovely portrait ..
Kathryn: Thanks, nice to know you find it lovely.
this is the kind of candid i aspire to capture, Kathryn. it's a close-up yet distant in content. it evokes empathy and invites the viewer to interpret. the humanness here is priceless.
Kathryn: Terry, I have seen some of your candid captures that are so human and emotional. There was something that drew me to her and I think you have hit on it, the humanness, the feelings of empathy, of being connected.
I love the intens look you captured
I'm pleased you decided to take this shot Kathryn - a great capture.
Very nice capture Kathryn. She seems so worried! You made a beautyful portrait here

That's lovely Kathryn. She kind of looks worried :-(

great portrait. love the emotion.
Great portrait - love the muted tones and depth of field.
Nice moody candid...the sepia is spot on
She feels sad I think ... Her heart is empty and she has to forget this so loved man ... Will she manage to do it ?
Her eyes have a sadness to them. Beautiful capture Kathryn
I believe that you have caught a very intimate expression. A good treatment, also!
That's nice: I wonder if she really is as sad as she looks?
She looks... disappointed? Angry? It's a very striking expression and a very professional, polished shot.
Astonishing, beautiful, candid portrait...you seem to have infused your image with all the melancholy in the world, Kathryn.
Great Portrait I hope thing work out for her.
Wow. Stunning.

Just a moment in time, that I happened to peer in on.
