When vivid flow of life transforms into a faded river
one learns to get a pleasure from simple things
to which before one didn’t pay too much attention:
a call from a friend who chats about nothing,
a loud croak of horny frogs through open windows,
a bright pink color of the wall
a rich chaotic texture of a pine straw
that someone spread around roses…
small simple things in quiet life sometimes shine brighter
than a life full of an expensive entertainment.

Kathryn: When the vivid flow of conversations,
which cover everything and nothing at once,
…
including pickles, 1940 microphones,
pocket dreams, casting a shrimp net,
wings built of silent whispers,
faded morning glories, beekeeping,
plumbers’ cracks, the way the leaves capture light,
a landlocked captain, past lives,
pinkie, tears shed over nights in a car, pine straw,
the succulent floral taste of perfectly ripened plums
…
become dammed up with words like verboten and monochromatic,
the thoughts become as stagnant and dried up as water
in a nonexistent oasis.

Ha! I had a friend who wanted to hear only happy, bright, shiny, new things. We are no longer friends.

Kathryn: Mary, for me the ultimate love and bond in a friendship be to able to both trust another person with your and happy, bright, shiny, new things and sad, dark, dull, old things and to listen to theirs with the same eagerness. No one's lives are perfect and no relationship is without warts, regardless of how much that person wants (or needs) to believe it is.

Your words and your photo have very touched my soul, and I know and understand (by having self experienced...) what you would like to express. VZ's comforting words may help you- and they are right for we are going to appreciate the "small simple things" more than ever after having been quite down. This a present of getting elder, too. Not the plenty and quantity, but the intensity and consciousness of all, yes, all different experiences are essential (so the words of a not resigning elder lady)! Sometimes (not always) the art can help -and I think and hope that you are helping yourself in this way!!

Kathryn: Philine, you are such a wise woman. The art and words are my expression--constrained only by my willingness to explore concepts and my creative energy Ups and downs make life interesting, don't they. Imagine living in a place where everything is always happy, bright, shiny, and new? I'll take my monochromatic life splashed with gold hues from the sun in the wheat fields, even if I have to be drenched in red now and then (see tomorrow's post).

I'll most likely be back in Germany before too long and hopefully will see you there
